housing prices

Illustration for New York Times

Tuesday, March 18, 2008

In March of 2008 the first very public signs of the coming great recession where appearing, and the New York Times opinion page began covering the housing crash and its similarity to Japan's historic "lost decade". We were asked to illustrate the nation-wide decline in housing prices (just days after we got into the housing game ourselves!). We created simple house sculptures that, when lit from the back, created a looming shadow of a downward pointing arrow. As the sun rises (or sets) behind them, the shadows get longer (or shorter). The ambiguity at the time wasn't cleared for a long time (and not even at the time of this writing!)
