Synechdoche

Illustration for
Blender Magazine

Charlie Kaufman’s Synechdoche, New York is an overwhelming film. It depicts a theater director struggling with physical illness and the loss of his family, all the while creating the longest, largest play ever and building the entire city of New York inside a warehouse (that is also in New York). Its wonderful, strange and funny. We could only scratch the surface in reducing it to a single image. Our view of paper boxes open to the world as a theater set opens from the side, each contains a difficult piece of one man's puzzle.   Caption:
"Thinking inside the box (clockwise from left): Jennifer Jason Leigh, Michelle Williams, Emily Watson, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Dianne Wiest, Catherine Keener and Samantha Morton"
